Guitarist, singer and songwriter Leni Stern creates music
that immediately captivates the audience.
In a field traditionally dominated by men, Leni is a standout. As
the recipient of the Gibson Guitar-sponsored honor of "Best Female
Jazz Guitarist" for five consecutive years, she is touted as a
"musician’s musician" while at the same time appealing to audiences
everywhere.
Leni's public profile extends beyond the realm of performing artist
as she also served as host for BET's Jazz awards and hosted a
BET series featuring jazz musicians from around the world. She has
been honored as an "artist in residence" by the Berklee School of
Music, authored a highly respected textbook on composition for
Warner Publishing, taught composition and songwriting, performed
clinics nationwide, and even played a leading role in a primetime TV
series in Germany.
Leni Stern's latest release, “AFRICA,” two years in the
making, integrates African and Western music forms with such
authenticity that it may come to be regarded as an 'Audio
Documentary' of African musical life.
"One of the world's most fully realized songwriters and
guitarists... one of the finest artists, any genre, working now." —
LA Weekly
‘Fleet and lyrical" — The New Yorker
"Exotic and solemnly beautiful... Stern sees the poetry in incidents
both large and small." — JazzTimes
“Stern has always brought a sense of seeking and solace to her
music. Africa is the culmination of those desires. She recorded the
album in Mali with a stellar cast of local musicians. It is life
affirming and questioning, an accomplished amalgam of native
musicians performing African rhythms and tableaus, Stern's vocals
and evocative guitar. Throughout it all, Stern fingerpicks gorgeous,
subtle guitar solos that blur the lines between blues, jazz and
African sounds.” - Ken Micallef, Downbeat
